No one, not even Americans, are required to salute the American flag. That's about the only good thing the WTS ever did -- Check out the U.S. Supreme Court case, Barnett vs. West Virginia School Board of Education (1943). Witness kids were being expelled for not saluting the flag. The first suit debated in the U.S. Supreme Court went against the dubs. Several years later Barnett won.

Your son should have spoken to school administrators about your granddaughter's rights.

Despite not being a dub any more, I still refuse to salute the U.S. flag, because I don't like being expected to display my patriotism on demand.

I'm not defending "the setup" or saying the U.S. is the greatest country that ever existed. We know we're hated. We know we have our problems. We know what they are. We don't need outsiders gleefully pointing them out in the guise of "caring" about us.

America-bashing again, Simon? Oops, I mean U.S.A.-bashing.

I often heard the rumor that Canadians in general despise Americans. And the Brits (I think you're one of those too?) hate Amerticans even more. Guess it's true, given how quick you are to post anything that denigrates us.

Maybe you should ban Americans from JWN and only allow Brits, Canadians and Aussies to snuggle together.

Next Of Kin - your JW family will REFUSE BLOOD if you need it...

simon's thread about making a will reminded me of this issue, and the fact that many of you may not have given it much thought.. .

this is something that occurred to me many years ago - and i have a good friend listed as my next of kin (nok).

a few years ago, i had a situation where i was hemmorhaging, not capable of giving consent because i was heavily sedated, and the permission had to be signed.

This is an problem that every exdub must worry about if they still have dub family connections.

For instance, if you let your children visit your dub parents for a weekend, what assurance do you have that in an emergency in which there is no time to call you, your parents will not withhold consent for a blood transfusion? It's a slim chance, to be sure, but still one to consider.

I always sweated bullets when my young son visited his dub grandparents. I made sure I was close to the phone the whole time. It's a crime that we have to worry like this.

Dubs are good at convincing themselves that ridiculous WTS doctrines are true. Let that tendency in your sister keep working when it comes to you. If she's willing to pretend you're not apostate, and you're ok with that, then let that sleeping dog lie. You may feel pain at the idea, but it's a lot less pain than you would feel if she were to shun you.

i"m listening to the 2013 dc green bay saturday talk on false gods.. the speaker says no one would knowingly worship false deities.

but could we inadvertantly give jehovah less than exclusive devotion he deserves.. he said:you have not allowed this deception power of sin to sensual desires, material comforts, pets, technology, entertainment or food to become objects of devotion to you.. anything that interferes with our spiriutal routine has the power of eroding or weaking our relationship with jehovah.. .

my dogs can erode my relationship with jehovah.

You had a talented bird, Mouthy. I once had a parrot that could say, "Come here and give me a little kiss," Step up," "I love you," and "I'll get the stick!!!" But I never threatened to hit him with a stick! I had tried for weeks to get him to step up on a manzanita perch, but he took a particular dislike to it, so all I had to do after a while was threaten to get the stick, and he would stop his mischief and behave. But everyone who heard him say that looked at me strangely. I've had to explain the story to many, many people. That bird was a hoot.
